I LOVE THIS VIDEO AND now I want hot dogs!!
On a side note, excited for House Roots Coffee coming this summer!
Stacy and Daniel are an awesome couple from New York. So glad I got to see them out there when Run River North played CMJ back in November. Instantly knew I’d love these guys after watching their engagement. Above is the same day edit – enjoy!
psalm 36:5 | Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
I used to (and still) geek out on Sound on Sound articles for hours, trying to absorb every last technique or secret these producers would reveal, from mic techniques, signal chain, recording philosophy, compressors, blahblahblahblah in hopes that my mixes would sound just a little more closer to theirs. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug11/articles/fleet-foxes.htm and others like this article, I would read, re-read, and re-read. I was drawn to a couple producers that had done some of my favorite albums and quickly took note. I came across this guy named Phil Ek, who had done a couple albums I really liked. This Phil Ek guy was responsible for both Fleet Foxes albums and Band of Horses records – pieces I thoroughly enjoyed and knew the lyrics to and sang along with. He, along with Marcus Dravs (Coldplay, Mumford, Arcade Fire) were two superstar producers in my mind. Only in my wildest dreams would I dream of being even remotely related to a project of theirs. Little did I ever suspect…my wildest dreams…
We get to work with Phil Ek for our album. (YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW STOKED I AM PHIL EK F O R R E A L!?)
When I found out Phil was interested in working with us, I seriously asked if we were being punk’d as my skepticism/cynicism meter was beyond its max. Again and again, God completely SHATTERS my expectations and limited mindset. We’ve been blessed with a label deal at Nettwerk, publishing deal at Warner Chappell, rep’d by a fine agent in David Levine at William Morris, and amazing amazing managers in Pat, Kyle and Keith at PMM. We will be recording with Phil and now and its too late for Phil to turn back as he’s with us for all of June as we go up to Seattle to record. I can’t wait.

It’s not too often I get to shoot in the valley but I’m always pleasantly surprised by these random hidden gems in the valley. An immediate kinship was felt upon finding out Susanna went to Van Nuys High School – they had once called this place home. They got married at First United Methodist Church in North Hollywood – loved the “old” church feel and all of the bricks – with the reception at Sheraton Hotel with awesome views. Best of luck to Susanna and Mike.

My dear friend Michael Whang got engaged last month. He is a fulltime divinity student at Duke on a full scholarship and a 3/4 time worship pastor at a megachurch in North Carolina. He now has a new project called Cloud Canyon and he so graciously asked for my humble mastering services on their new EP. I think working with audio has got to be one of my favorite things to do. It’s one of those things I don’t mind losing sleep over, and oftentimes I find myself up into the wee hours of the night before noticing the time.

Mastering is very different from mixing. In mixing, you’re aiming to achieve balance of the vocals and all the instruments on the track. Most of the tonal decisions and volume levels are achieved in this stage. Mastering is different in that you’re looking to achieve a couple things: 1) Bring up the overall volume of the track 2) Make sure all the tracks sound similar in volume and tone 3) “Coloring” EQ and notching out undesirable frequencies.
Process:
- eq to tighten up bass. boosting subs around 30hz and cutting 60hz and its octave, around 120hz. tight like a closed fist.
- gave it some more air around 2.5 and 4k, 16k
- compressed around 2k because the beater and snare were a bit harsh. this was my biggest concern in the overall
- made the stereo image wider
- went with la2a and L3 as limiters, Dorrough to monitor levels
Look out for the EP soon. Sounds like what I would call “Post-Alternative-Christian”, the evolution of Jars of Clay and David Crowder mixed in with Explosions in the Sky.

I really don’t know what’s going on with Lifestream but yet another testimony of God’s favor over this community in the arts. Sejin Park, Beverly High Basketball varsity and 3-point raining partner in crime, Irvine Law admitted, token hot friend, is now a model. He signed up with an agency THIS February, and already can claim a client list that includes McDonald’s, the band Phoenix, and Levi’s. WHAT!? GO sej.

Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. Genesis 9:16 @lifestreamvalley #iphone
